Inlays, onlays, and overlays are restoration types for repairing decayed or damaged teeth. These custom-made prosthetics can be fabricated from porcelain, composite resin, base metal, or gold. E.max (a lithium disilicate glass-ceramic material) is currently the most popular choice among patients due to its aesthetic qualities, durability, and biocompatibility. These restorations are created outside the mouth and then cemented into place to restore tooth shape, strength, and function.
Inlays are used when the damage or decay is confined within the cusps (the raised points) of the tooth. They fit into the prepared cavity within the tooth and are bonded in place. Onlays are similar to inlays but are used when the damage or decay extends beyond one or more cusps of the tooth.
Overlays cover the entire biting surface of a tooth. They are more extensive than inlays and onlays and are often used when a significant portion of the tooth's surface is damaged or decayed.
Choose the right restoration based on the extent of tooth damage.
Applied when decay remains within the tooth's cusps (raised points). They fit into the prepared cavity and bond in place, functioning like a puzzle piece filling the decay space.
Used when damage extends beyond one or more cusps, providing coverage similar to inlays but with greater extent.
Cover the entire biting surface of a tooth, addressing significant damage or decay across a larger area.
